Questions & Answers

#1 Can you explain to us what your typical day looks like in your business analyst role?

It’s very diverse and dynamic! All I can say is that the business analyst role gives me a lot of space to explore datasets and figure out the next business decisions with data. Basically my role acts as the consultant within the internal team, half part technical and half part business decisions.

My typical day starts with looking at the Favro Board and seeing any ad hoc request within the team. After checking that, depending on the urgency, I will delegate some tasks to the data analyst within my team and make sure that everything is aligned for the day. Then, I will check the dashboards to make sure that everything is running smoothly. I will spend some time brainstorming the next projects or doing analysis, or visualizations for the report or dashboard, depending on the project. There are usually a couple of meetings in the afternoon for alignment.

#2 Biggest myths and misconceptions about Data Analytics?

For me, I think it's the notion that data analytics is all about programming or coding. It’s not. You need to be very smart and knowledgeable about the business context, and able to communicate well to the stakeholders in order to convince them about your insights. Without these pillars, you cannot be impactful in your work.

#3 Your proudest professional achievement as a business analyst?

Building a >500-lines SQL query by myself for an important table that is being utilised by the whole business function on my 2nd month being a business analyst and learning SQL! I think I was proud of myself because of the impact that I can give, as well.

#4 Things you wish you could have learned earlier in your career?

I wish I knew more about business and data analytics even longer and have learned programming languages such as SQL & Python when I was in college. Also, having some internship experience to gain a portfolio.

I love reading publications about data in Medium, like Analytics Vidhya and Towards Data Science. They collate writings from different levels and are very up-to-date with the current trends.

#6 Your tips for someone who is interested in starting his career in Data Analytics (aside from applying to RevoU :)?

  1. Learn the basics of SQL and programming in R or Python
  2. Start building projects and join the memberships of the data community
  3. Read and follow data analytics blogs or articles to keep yourself informed
  4. Join a Data Analytics Bootcamp :)

#7 The fundamental skills a Data Analyst is expected to have?

There are five things that I think is important to have:

  • Business Acumen
  • Problem-Solving & Analytical Thinking
  • Math & Statistics (working with data/numbers)
  • Database & Programming Skills (R, Python, SQL)
  • Communication Skills

#8 What distinguishes a good Data Analyst from a great one?

Great combination of the five things that I mentioned above, it’s all about balance. For example, if you are lacking in technical skills, you will take more time to do your work and not be very efficient. To become a leader, you need to focus on growing your communication skills and business acumen.
