Questions & Answers
#1 Can you explain to us what your typical day as an SEO practitioner looks like at Glints and also in your personal SEO project?
Becoming an SEO practitioner is a very interesting job. Everyday I always face something new.
I always start my day by checking Google Analytics and Google Search Console data. If all is good, I can take a cup of coffee latte with no sugar directly then.
I don’t have a daily routine after lunch time. Everyday is so different. Sometimes I will make a product requirement, sometimes make a report, sometimes make an audit, and so on. But this is something very interesting because SEO practitioners always have unique day.
#2 Biggest myths and misconceptions about working in SEO?
When I started my SEO journey, I thought SEO means how good you trick Google so Google will make your site on 1st rank. Backlinks, keyword stuffing, very looonnnggggggg content, etc. If we find the root cause, probably so many people think so because they only care with ranking, ranking, and ranking.
Now, for me SEO means partnering with Google to provide the best search results for Google's users.
Secondly, organic traffic actually is not free. You need to hire people (not only SEO guys but also product, content, and engineers). You also need to spend your time and energy to focus on optimizing your website. Even sometimes you need premium tools which are not cheap.
#3 Your proudest professional achievement in your SEO career journey?
Back to 2017 I think not many people know tiket.com. It was not easy to find their website on Google search.
It was a very exciting journey building an SEO team, reframe, and preparing the SEO foundation after rewriting all of the code for tiket.com. There were so many things that I learned. Collaboration with all stakeholders was one of the key and I am very happy with it.
#4 What drives you to work in your current industry?
I have to admit that I entered this industry coincidentally (I think many people out there also). But there is something inside that increases my adrenaline every time I succeed to give impact through SEO. Especially when the competition is real. It’s not easy to explain the feeling, I guess you need to try it by yourself :p
#5 Things you wish you could have learned earlier in your career?
So many SEO practitioners failed not because of lack of SEO understanding but because of lack of communication skill.
I am not talking about gossiping with your best friend but it’s about delivering your idea so others can understand and accept it. Little bit political maybe.
#6 Books / Online resources you follow to remain on top of the most important industry trends and keep improving in your field (blogs, podcasts, newsletters)?
#7 Your tips for someone who is interested in starting his career in SEO (aside from applying to RevoU) :)?
Start it! You can have your own blog or website and do a lot of testing. If you face difficulty, you can find the answer on Google btw. And if you make a mistake, that’s fine, don’t be afraid, fix it, and learn from it.
#8 The fundamental skills an SEO professional is expected to have?
Go to Advance SEO Program and see the “What You Will Learn” section. That’s all the fundamental skill you need to have as an SEO professional LoL.
But for me personally, SEOs should have good communication skills and honesty.
Why? SEO needs to work together with other teams. So without good communication skills, it will be difficult. And SEO is not about tricking Google or tricking your users. Honesty is a very important thing that SEO professionals need to have. We need to give the REAL information to our user.
#9 What distinguishes a good SEO person from a great one?
Business Solution.
It is a combination between SEO skill, business understanding, user experience, understanding about your competitor, and problem solving that give impact to the business.
#10 Best examples of SEO activities (outside Glints ) in Indonesia?
Traveloka, Tokopedia, Alodokter
